Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

About a month ago my sister sent a test message to all of her brothers asking if anyone could stay with Mom over Labor Day weekend.  Seeing I’m the only one in town, I told here I could work that into my schedule.  My sister then thanked me for doing that.  She thanked me; that’s why I want to spend a few minutes on this blog thanking my sister, her husband and children who take such wonderful care of my mother everyday.

I remember the day that my sister and her husband called me up and asked if my wife and I could go to dinner with them – they had an idea that they wanted to share with us.  As we met that night for dinner, they explained to us that they wanted my parents (who at the time had spent a long time looking to move into a retirement community but were rejected either because they had made too much money or hadn’t made enough money to satisfy the standards of whatever communities they had applied to) to move in with them.  Of course Sarah and I thought that was a wonderful idea.  I then remember the night the four of us met with Mom and Dad to tell them.  After Janice’ and Brett explained what they wanted to do, Mom and Dad sat there kind of shell shocked.  My dad was the first to reply and said simply “I don’t know what to say.”  My mom replied with a very simple statement…”Just say thanks Jack.”

And so came the process of selling my parents townhouse.  The first realtor came in and quickly explained to everyone that in order to sell the townhouse, the kitchen would have to be updated with new cabinets and granite counter tops, the carpet should be replaced throughout and the list went on.  The second realtor came in, looked at the townhouse and the area and told us – I can sell this – no problem.  The house never hit the market before it was sold for the listed price.  That was the first hurdle.  The second hurtle was for Janice’ and Brett to sell their home and find a house that was a single story and would have enough space to give Mom and Dad a “space” of their own and still have enough room for Janice, Brett and her girls.  Through God’s providence, they found a beautiful home not far from where they had been living, so that transition in moving went smoother than anticipated.

Fast forward through the years and Janice’, Brett, Christopher, Bethany, Becky, Jessica and Alix have been and still are a true blessing for my parents.  My father has since passed and my mother now has her medical issues to deal with, but Janice’ and Brett are always there to take of her.  So I am a bit humbled when Janice’ thanks me for staying with my Mom for the weekend (by the way, I need to give a shout out to my daughters Mary, Ruth and Teresa who have also given up some of their time to stay with Grandma).  Janice’, there is no need to thank me…God bless you, God bless Brett.  Thank You for your selfless commitment to our parents.  Enjoy the weekend.

Do something great for our Lord today – give your Mom and Dad a hug – thank them for all that they sacrificed for you.

God’s will, not mine, be done.

Be not afraid; just have faith.

Jesus, I trust in You.
