TGIF – Thank God its Friday! Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

It has been a long hard week at work.  It has also been a hard week looking at what our lives should be like – slave to righteousness as apposed to slaves to sin.  As I read today’s readings , I am still getting that message that we must break the bonds of sin in order to live our life of righteousness.  The first reading truly hits home with me this morning because for many years I have struggled with my weight.  Every morning I wake up with the intention of eating right, exercising, making the sacrifices I need to make in order to get me to a healthier weight.  Everyday of my adult life (practically) I pray this intention but still to this day struggle.  That’s why today’s first reading to the Romans really hit home for me…

Brothers and sisters:
I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh.
The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not.
For I do not do the good I want,
but I do the evil I do not want.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it,
but sin that dwells in me.
So, then, I discover the principle
that when I want to do right, evil is at hand.
For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self,
but I see in my members another principle
at war with the law of my mind,
taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Miserable one that I am!
Who will deliver me from this mortal body?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Who will deliver me from this mortal body?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

I have struggled with my weight for the better part of 35 years now.  It has become a habit and not one that I’m proud of.  I must remind myself now that only through Jesus Christ our Lord will I be able to break the bond of slavery that food has over me.  I will keep fighting this bond of slavery in order that I can become that slave to righteousness instead.  As I was reading this morning, a song popped into my head that I will make sure I listen to before the day is done…

I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright)
Bright (bright) sun-shining day
It’s gonna be a bright (bright)
Bright (bright) sun-shining day

Oh yes I can make it now the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright)
Bright (bright) sun-shining day

(Ooh…)
Look all around, there’s nothing but blue skies
Look straight ahead, there’s nothing but blue skies

I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright)
Bright (bright) sun-shining day.

Up until today, I would have posed the challenge that if you can tell me who sang this I would take you to DQ; but I need stay away from the “Q” for now – so I will offer this instead.  If you can tell me who sang this, I’ll offer a prayer intention for you instead.

Do something great for our Lord today – have a great Friday!  Do something today that will make you stand in awe of God’s creation.  Celebrate the hard week of work and look forward to a relaxing weekend.

God’s will, not mine, be done.

Be not afraid; just have faith.

Jesus, I trust in You.

He must increase; I must decrease.

But you, man of God, pursue righteousness,
devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.
Compete well for the faith.
