Your word, O Lord, is truth: consecrate us in the truth.

Do we believe in the Word of the Lord? Do we believe in His Truth? Food for thought this morning as we continue our readings from the first book of God’s Truth (the Bible) – Genesis. Today’s reading from Genesis comes from Chapter 2 and carries a command from God that I believe still stands true today; it is also my thought that we as men still can’t seem to grasp and understand.

The LORD God gave man this order:
“You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden
except the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
From that tree you shall not eat;
the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die.”

God puts us in paradise, offers us an endless bounty of good food, gives us stewardship of paradise and promises life. What is His only request? Don’t eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Why? My faith tells me that we are not God and it is far above our “pay grade” to be able to know truly what is done for the good of man and what is true evil. Our minds simply can’t handle that pure knowledge – only God is capable of that. But to this day our arrogance gets the best of us. We simply know better than God what is good and what is evil and throughout our history have gone to many extremes to prove it. We fight, we kill, we put down entire races that we find inferior to ours. We pass laws to prove who has the POWER and who doesn’t. We have to change our ways. We have to learn that we can’t know everything – we shouldn’t know everything – because quite frankly, it’s not our business to know everything. What we must know and understand, is that we are here to be good stewards of God’s beautiful creation. We are here to help God and to help each other. We learned yesterday that we are ALL made in the image and likeness of God. We learned that it was GOD and GOD alone who created our universe and all that is in it. So let’s take to the business of protecting, nurturing, cultivating and loving everything that GOD has created and blessed us with…let’s leave the decisions for LIFE, to determine what is GOOD and what is EVIL to the Creator. Let us all LIVE in God’s love and for God’s purpose and abstain from the fruit that grows on the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. I chose LIFE so that in death I’m surely not doomed to die.

Do something great for our Lord today – pass me another White Castle so I can prove to you the words from our Gospel today…

He said to them,
“Are even you likewise without understanding?
Do you not realize that everything
that goes into a person from outside cannot defile,
since it enters not the heart but the stomach
and passes out into the latrine?”

And most importantly – the very next line of the Gospel – THE GOOD NEWS OF THE LORD – is this…

(Thus he declared all foods clean.)

Amen, brothers and sisters, Amen.

I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.

God’s will, not mine, be done.

Be not afraid; just have faith.

Jesus, I trust in You.

He must increase; I must decrease.

Lord, if You wish, You can make me clean.

But you man of God chose righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience and gentleness. Compete well for the faith.
